I’ve decided to set myself a challenge this month by going the whole month without shopping. I was inspired to do this by a post that Shelia wrote over on her blog In Search of Sheila. January is the start of a New Year, and, as a student, I do not need to be wasting money in the January sales on things that I really don’t need.
When I first read Shelia’s blog post I thought that going a whole month without shopping would be impossible, but I loved her post as she made this challenge seem achievable, with a goal that is not totally unreachable!
So firstly here are the rules I have set myself:
- Not shopping doesn’t mean not spending any money at all. But it does mean only spending money on essentials. This includes house bills, and food and living essentials such as toilet roll.
- In terms of transport I already walk to uni nearly every day. To cut costs I plan to walk everywhere I can, or get the train if it’s too far to walk, so that means no Ubers!
- I have also decide to plan my meals. By doing this I hope to minimise my spending on food, only buying what I need for the week and not wasting money on unnecessary snacks and sweets, whilst also making my own lunch lunches instead of buying a sandwich or meal deal.I have worked out from my meal planner that food should cost around £70 for the month. Obviously this is not a set figure, but this works out at around £17.50 a week, and some of the tings I will be buying like olive oil, cereal and pasta will last for longer than a month. So my actual costs should be slightly lower!
I will be starting when I get back to university and am cooking for myself again, so I guess it’s technically three weeks of January and one week of February challenge… Anyway, I hope to keep track of and write down all my spending, and I will post updates on my progress, as well as how my meal planning goes!
I am thinking of maybe vlogging my experience of meal planning on a budget, if that is of interest? Please do let me know!
A few people have mentioned they’d like to try this January Challenge so I was thinking of creating a group so we can support and encourage each other and also share tips, ideas and blog posts from our experiences. Comment or DM me if you’d be up for it!💕 #januarychallenge https://t.co/a9j1l9elaQ
